Should You Use Recycled Asphalt?

Updated: Jul 29, 2022

Did you know that recycled asphalt is the worlds most recycled material? Each year a little over 150 million tons of asphalt material is recycled in the United States. Out of that 150 million tons of asphalt 90% of it is recycled.

At JL Enterprise we also install recycled asphalt and we are here to give you the pros and cons if you decide to use recycled asphalt for your Denver asphalt driveway or parking lot.

Benefits of Recycling Asphalt

Environmental Benefits:

  • Increased use of RAP as a percentage of the total asphalt mix can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by eliminating the significant fuel consumption required to acquire and process raw materials for virgin mix.

  • Recycling asphalt pavement optimizes the use of natural resources, and reduces the cost in the production of new asphalt and benefits planet earth in the reduction of creating new asphalt from scratch.

  • Recycling the mineral particles that are produced during the process of asphalt pavement helps conserve natural resources.

Why Use Recycled Asphalt?

Recycled asphalt is very cost effective for the customers. The lower initial cost is a huge incentive for contractors and customers trying to stick to budget; and the quality offered by recycled asphalt product is invaluable as a base foundation.

Recycled asphalt is not only perfect if you want to stay in budget and save some money for you Denver asphalt paving projects, it has great benefit like excellent bonding qualities. Asphalt that has been recycled still has some tar in it. This means When wet and compacted correctly, recycled asphalt will bond easily. This will produce a semi-permanent parking lot or driveway, which keeps dust and dirt in place. Recycled asphalt is good for places that experience a lot of rain or snowfall.

Recycled Asphalt Cons

Quality. Recycled asphalt is not as good as regular hot mix, in terms of quality, as other recycled asphalt and most especially to a pure asphalt. This is because the quality of recycled asphalt would depend on how it is recycled. Before you buy recycled asphalt, you should make sure that you do your research so you can make an educated decision. Make sure that you are purchasing from a reputable recycling facility to make sure you are buying recycled asphalt that is of good quality.

Using recycled asphalt or not is entirely up to you. With the pros and cons listed above, you should be able to make an educated choice whether to buy recycled asphalt or go with the traditional hot mix asphalt.

Coloration. Given enough time and exposure to the sun, rain, and snow, the aggregate material that is recycled and used for a recycled asphalt driveway may be of a different coloration than your traditional hot mix. Although this does create a unique and one-of-a-kind look, the majority of home owners prefer hot mix asphalt, deep black of “true” asphalt materials. Keep this in mind before making a decision about the surfacing materials you would like for your home’s driveway.

To Wrap It All Up

At the end of the day the decision to choose between hot mix or recycled asphalt is yours. This type of asphalt is more of a quick fix and not to be used a permanent solution to your asphalt repair needs.

Due to the fact that the finished product is not a permanent fix , property owners who prefer a smooth and polished surface might benefit from talking to a supplier about paving their driveways with a hot mix asphalt that contains a percentage of recycled materials.
